Peel District Cycling Club members were greeted by prime conditions for racing in Baldivis over the weekend.
In A-grade the attacks started from the get-go.
Halfway through the second of eight laps a breakaway of four riders formed which included the winner of the last three A-grade races, Matt Peterson.
Unfortunately for Peterson, the other three were all members of the Arbitrage Racing team.
The next four laps saw these four strong riders work together and built up a commanding lead over the bunch.
With a little over a lap to go Conor Leahy and Luke Pledger attacked and established a small gap over Peterson.
Leahy and Pledger then worked together to build a solid lead over the chasing Peterson, who was escorted by the third Arbitrage rider Matt Upton.
In the end it was Leahy first, Pledger second with Upton coming off Peterson’s wheel to take third.
B-grade, saw a number of attacks, however, with 41 riders of similar ability it required something special to get a break.
It did not happen. In the bunch sprint it was Matthew Wardynec first, Michael Midgley second and Phil Deisel third.
C-grade had it largest field of the season with 25 riders and a very similar pattern to B-grade.
Riders would attack to try and get a break, but very quickly the bunch would chase them down. In the bunch sprint it was Albert Ullbricht first, Oliver Bleddyn second and Danny Savage third.
With a smaller field, a break was a possibility in D-grade.
On the second lap Colin Day and Joshua Howe broke free and worked together to establish a race winning lead.
With Day out sprinting Howe for the win, Cooper Bates lead the chase group home for third.
In E-grade it was Calum Milne against Joshua Trine over three laps.
Milne rode away from Trine early to take the win.
Sunday morning saw the West Coast Masters take to the Casuarina course, in cold but sunny conditions.
A-grade saw breaks established, reeled back in, then another break established, only to be chased down.
In the bunch sprint it was Martin Depiazzi first, Scott Sanders second and Eddie Hollands third.
B-grade saw a similar number of attacks, but a break wasn’t established until three laps to go when Greg Bayley got off the front alone.
He stayed there until the last lap. In the bunch sprint it was John Liso first, Garry Horsfield second and Paul Chartres third.
It was a similar story in C-grade with some attacking riding, but nobody getting away.
In the bunch sprint Peter Hunt was first, Gary Suckling second and Jason Hapeta third.
Other than being two laps shorter than C, D-grade was almost identical, even down to lap times.
In the bunch sprint it was Richard Stokes first, Graham Blyth second and Rod Atkinson third.
With a much smaller group in E-grade, there was a chance of a breakaway.
However, the bunch stuck together and in the sprint it was Gerry Allen first, Wayne Gordon second and Pat Briggs third.
