The Mandurah Magic men’s team’s horror season continued on the weekend, despite big performances from star player Ben Smith.
Smith tallied double-doubles with points and rebounds in games against Cockburn and the South West, but the injury-riddled Magic were dismantled in both encounters.
Mandurah fell to Cockburn 75-108 on Friday night before being beaten 96-125 by the Slammers on Saturday.
But each game was not without its bright spots.
The Magic may have been pulled apart in the first half against the Cougars, but their fight back in the second half was admirable.
At the half time break, the Magic trailed 33-65, facing a huge 32-point deficit.
While Mandurah wasn’t able to bridge the gap, they did stem Cockburn’s scoring in the final two quarters, allowing the lead to only stretch by a point.
As is routine in Magic matches, Trevor Setty and Smith starred in the match.
Setty recorded 22 points, four rebounds and four assists while Smith bagged 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Slammers game was a less inspiring affair, with the Magic scoring solidly for the majority of the match but failing to defend South West star Tre Nichols.
Mandurah notched high point totals in the first three quarters but was outscored 28-12 in the final term, leading to the blowout.
Nichols went off, scoring a massive 51 points, dishing out seven assists and pick-pocketing six steals.
Smith was again the shining light for the Magic, posting a huge game with 20 points and 23 rebounds.
Setty led the scoring for Mandurah with 30 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Next weekend, the Magic take on Stirling at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex.
