Mandurah says goodbye to graffiti

Operation Quadrangle aims to identify graffiti offenders, execute search warrants and target graffiti hot spots to reduce graffiti vandalism across WA. 

The program tries to engage community members into fighting graffiti and focuses on early intervention through education and awareness to reduce vandalism medium to long term. 

Local police officers have also engaged in talks and seminars in local high schools to talk about the social, legal and economic consequences of graffiti with younger people.

Local agent Senior Sergeant Steve Thompson said graffiti increases the perception of crime in the area and encouraged people to report them to police.

“Graffiti vandalism is not art, it is one of the most visible of all crimes in the community,” he said.

“Mandurah Police area working hard with the City and local schools to prevent offending, however we seek the support of the community in identifying those responsible.”

The City of Mandurah has also another initiatives in place to tackle vandalism graffiti. 

Local residents who had their properties tagged can get a graffiti removal bucket from the council administration building.

Two graffiti removal officers also work to remove graffiti from the City’s property, which get recorded before being erased in a state-wide database called ‘Good Bye Graffiti’. 

And citizens can also report graffiti online to the authorities through the Good Bye Graffiti website.

City of Mandurah chief Mark Newman said cooperation with WA police was very important in tackling vandalism graffiti and said he was disappointed to see graffiti in the community.

“The City works closely with local Police on a range of strategies to ensure that the city remains safe and enjoyable for our residents, businesses and visitors,” he said.
