Last Friday, artists and representatives across the country took part in action against the continued issue of arts funding.
It was a massive event, with media blackouts, free gigs and passionate articles all detailing the struggles faced by Australian arts organisations, venues and artists in fuelling their trade.
Katie Noonan put the hard question to Turnbull on Q&A on Monday. Will the Coalition reinstate an independant naitonal arts body, and commit to supporting arts in Australia?
The Prime Minister’s response, in the best of words, was non-committal.
That’s a shame, because so much of our cultural identity as a country is tied into the expressiveness of our art.
This is a period of tightening our bootstraps, as we all know, but if the current government is committed to fueling an innovative and creative society – as they keep espousing in campaign material and doorstops – they need to take arts funding seriously.
