A man convicted of his tenth driving under suspension offence in Mandurah Magistrates Court on Friday escaped an immediate term of imprisonment.
Damien Paul Verbakel, who had four previous convictions for the same offence, pleaded guilty to six fresh charges.
Verbakel also pleaded guilty to speeding after being clocked at 120km/h in an 80km/h zone on Forrest Highway on November 14, 2015.
The court heard Verbakel’s vehicle was impounded following the speeding offence.
His lawyer described him as “extremely remorseful”, and asked the magistrate to consider a community-based order, despite Verbakel owing $15,000 in unpaid fines.
Magistrate Vivien Edwards fined Verbakel $1000 and sentenced him to seven months imprisonment, suspended for 15 months.
She also disqualified Verbakel from driving for 52 months.
