LOCAL athletics star Mia Pedrana became the youngest member of the St. Catherine’s College mascot team after a dinner held in her honour at the University of Western Australia on Saturday night.
Mia has been obsessed with athletics since she was three, and was introduced to UWA when her father Mike began studying literature and sociology at the university.
“The kids come up and check out the university with me on weekends and Mia spotted some members of the athletics crew doing some training,” Mike said.
“She was absolutely wrapped with them and said that’s what she wanted to do when she grew up, so I sent an email to the dean of the school and they decided to hold an entire dinner in her honour.
“The whole thing was really overwhelming, Mia was extremely happy to become a part of the team.”
Mia took up athletics at a young age and quickly developed a knack for the sport.
Mike thanked UWA and St. Catherine’s for giving her the chance to be part of the sport on a different level.
“The faculty have been really great – when I let them know Mia wanted to be part of the school I had no idea they would go this above and beyond,” he said.
“They gave her a tour of the school and made her the youngest mascot of a 70-year tradition, so we can’t thank them enough for their generosity.”
