The owners of Yarloop Hotel, which was destroyed in January’s devastating fires, have turned to private companies for the clean up of their properties after the state government provided them with a quote of $199,243.72 plus GST.
The owners shared the news in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
According to the owners, the state government agreed to pay for the clean up of their home after refusing to pay for the hotel clean up.
They received a written quote of $199,243.72 plus GST for the hotel clean up and they said they were told the clean up for the house would cost the government $66,000.
Unable to pay for the hotel clean up, the owners turned to a local company, which quoted $50,000 plus GST for both the hotel and house clean up.
“So we told government we do not wont any of there help and we would do the lot ourselves [sic],” they wrote on Facebook.
“They could of got local company for quarter of price. And put the money they saved to rebuilding our CRC community centre, workshops, hall and still had leftovers. This needs to be known by all please share as its robbery what there doing.”
Department of Premier and cabinet spokesperson said their contractor’s quotes were only estimates and no official budget would be set for the job for the residents to pay until after the clean up.
“The rates quoted by Toxfree were competitive compared with those incurred by the Shire of Mundaring following the Parkerville bushfire, which were set following an open tender in the metropolitan area,” the department of Premier and cabinet spokesperson said.
The department also said the owner had advised them about his intentions to engage his own contractor.
“The State will enable his contractors to have access to the site in order to safely complete the demolition and clearance,” the department spokesperson said.
