THE new kerbside Organics bin service is off to a good start in the Shire of Collie, with the reduction of landfill already being noted.
Commencing in early April with the support of a ‘Better Bins Program’ grant from the Waste Authority, the service has met State diversion from landfill targets four years early.
In the first month 94.80 Tonnes has been collected, which would have otherwise gone to landfill.
The service has dramatically increased the Shire’s total kerbside bins combined recycling rate from an average of 19 per cent to 52 per cent.
This has meant that the State set target of 50% diversion from landfill by the year 2020 is already being met by the Shire for its kerbside bin services. In addition, contamination levels for Organics bins are low and on par with other Councils in the region who have the three bin service.
Shire of Collie Chief Executive Officer David Blurton, said residents are to be congratulated for their outstanding effort using the Organics bin service.
“They have set a great example that other communities can follow to reduce landfill and improve environmental outcomes” he said.
One roll of compostable bags has been supplied with the new bins to help residents use the service.
Vouchers for more rolls are also included on the Shire’s kerbside collection calendar.
Only compostable bags can be used, as biodegradable, degradable and plastic bags won’t break down into compost.
The Organics waste collected from the service is sent to a regional Council operated organics processing facility where it is recycled into compost.
It is then sold commercially to fund the ongoing operation of the facility and ensure it is sustainable.
Free tours of the facility are available for the public.
