Peel Volunteer Resource Centre (PVRC) is hoping to promote the important work of local volunteers in the community during National Volunteer Week.
The yearly event, which this year runs from May 9 to 15, advocates and awards volunteers in areas across the country.
PVRC Manager Vicki Pollard said the week was important, as it validated the often unseen work volunteers do throughout the community.
“Volunteers are so important, but a lot of what they do is behind the scenes,” she said.
“It’s a joke in the industry that if volunteers went on strike, nothing would get done. I think there is some truth to that, because there’s so much that volunteers do that other people wouldn’t realise.”
Volunteers WA estimate the monetary value of volunteers in the state at around $39 billion annually.
Ms Pollard said many areas of the community relied on volunteers to operate, and many community programs depend on volunteer effort.
“Things like mental health support, aged care, even sport and recreation, all of these areas require a lot of volunteers to run properly and efficiently,” she said.
The Peel Volunteer Resource Centre are hosting a movie screening at Reading Cinemas on May 9; an afternoon tea at Mandurah Yacht Club on May 10; and on May 13 internationally recognised trainer Rob Jackson will deliver two workshops on the value of volunteering.
