Eight to 11 year-old students from Ocean Road, Falcon and South Halls Head primary schools had a taste of what it is like to work in the mining, oil and gas industries through hand-on activities at Halls Head College on Wednesday.
The event was part of a pioneer initiative by the Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) to engage children with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers.
The children had the opportunity to participate in interactive and hands-on activities such as digging for diamonds, building a spaghetti and marshmallow bridge, and driving machinery in a mine equipment simulator.
They also attended a round of talks and speeches from women working in the industry to encourage girls to pursue careers in the STEAM fields, traditionally viewed as a male-dominated.
