PEEL Thunderbirds players Megan and Jessica Williams made history on Sunday, when they became the first mother-daughter duo to take to the field together in WA Women’s Football League history.
The pair laced up their boots for the Thunderbirds reserves together, with mother Megan describing it as a “dream come true”.
“I’ve supported Jess through her years in the Thunderbirds youth girls and to have her come up and play in the reserves with me was a dream come true,” she said.
“It was a really proud and passionate moment for our family – there were some tears flowing and it was a great moment.”
The footy-mad family also had father and husband Gary on the sideline as an assistant coach.
The pair even played in the same position, teaming up to take on ruck duties.
“We both rotated through the ruck and Jess played really well,” Megan said.
While the result did not go Peel’s way as they lost to Perth Angels 10.19 (79) to 0.1 (1), the emotion of the moment will stick in the family’s mind for years to come.
In the league contest, the Thunderbirds topped Claremont 8.9 (57) to 4.5 (29) while Peel’s youth girls came away with a tight win against the Angels, finishing the match 4.7 (31) to 3.8 (26) victors.
