THE TRAIN STATION in Mandurah was awash with silver Thursday morning, as more than 50 seniors headed to Perth to smash a world record.
With 147 people turning up at Elizabeth Quay on the day (April 28), a large portion of which came up from the Mandurah area, the previous record of only 52 people seemed meager.
People Who Care, a group who provide services to seniors, organised the unofficial world record attempt for the largest seniors’ outdoor exercise class.
Linda Watt, from People Who Care in South-West Mandurah, said the record attempt was a good way to encourage the benefits of seniors exercises.
“We’re using it as a fundraiser for People Who Care, and it’s actually really good, we’ve got a group of our seniors… going up to the Bell Tower in Perth,” Ms Watt said.
“We do lots of exercise groups, some of the ladies go to strong on your feet and the gentle joints program, which is a hydro program in Pinjarra… and some of the women do chair-bound exercises which is really simple stuff.”
Dot Buckland, one of the Mandurah ladies heading north for the record, said she was excited to participate.
“Not too sure what I’ve gotta do yet, but I can put my hands up over my head… [exercises] are very good, they keep you loose,” she said, showing off her arm exercises.
The free seniors outdoor exercise class was run by professional trainers.
