PREMIER Colin Barnett unveiled detailed plans for the $350 million redevelopment of Mandurah Forum on Monday morning, announcing retailer David Jones would be the cornerstone tenant.
The redeveloped centre would be the largest south of Perth, Mr Barnett said.
The project is estimated to create 1050 jobs during construction and an extra 700 permanently after completion.
"When the project is completed, it will have almost doubled the size of its retail floor space to 71,000 square metres and include an extra two department stores – including David Jones – and about 150 new specialty stores,” Mr Barnett said.
"As the population in the Peel region rapidly expands, this new centre will play a pivotal role in shifting the traditional focus of shopping complexes as simply being a place to shop, to one that brings people together and provides a sense of place and social and recreational opportunities closer to local amenities and homes.
"This project is an excellent example of how the state government's comprehensive planning policies are changing complex retail developments to better serve community needs through a range of land uses."
Mr Barnett also unveiled a new artwork by Mandurah artist Emma Blyth – titled "Mandurah Moments" – which was commissioned as the artistic centerpiece of the redevelopment.
Vicinity Centres executive Jonathan Timms said the redevelopment would introduce a Target and new Kmart, Big W, Coles and Woolworths stores.
“We are creating a major regional shopping centre with the introduction of the first next generation David Jones store in WA which will anchor an upgraded fashion offer at the centre, and also include an enhanced food and dining offer,” he said.
The redevelopment’s design will include a coastal look and feel, easy access and 3000 parking bays, including a multi-deck and shaded rooftop car park.
Construction is set to commence in May.
