A Dunsborough resident had the surprise of her life when a two-headed, four-armed bobtail lizard was born in her backyard.
When Jo heard rustling out the back of her semi-rural home on Monday, she first thought it was a snake, but relaxed when she saw a bobtail move on from the spot.
But when the rustling continued she investigated further and noticed two newborn bobtails, clearly only minutes old.
What she thought were two more babies were struggling under a log and seemed stuck in the sand, but as she helped to move the "fourth" lizard she realised the third bobtail actually had two heads and two extra arms.
"The two healthy bobtails were already starting to move off but the third two-headed bobtail was struggling to walk," she said.
"Both heads were moving, but because of the position of the extra head it was making it near impossible for the bobtail to go anyway."
Worried about its wellbeing, she took it to the local vet.
"The entire vet staff were absolutely fascinated but we really had no other option but to euthanise," Jo said.
"I was very sad when I left without the little bobtail but it wouldn't have survived in the wild."
