WAROONA Police have discovered a burnt out methamphetamine lab and marijuana crop which they believe was destroyed by January’s bushfire near Preston Beach Road.
Local residents discovered the remains in burnt-out bush, which police later confirmed were consistent with drug production.
Senior constable Stuart Butcher from Waroona Police said reports were received of “strange articles” near Preston Beach.
“We came across remnants of an old cannabis grow area,” he said.
“Then we searched the bush and came across what we believe to be articles used in methamphetamine manufacture.
“Organised Crime came out and confirmed what we had, due to the nature of what might be out there, ammonia gas, etc.”
Senior constable Butcher said police were interested in any information from the public which may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
He said marijuana crops were sometimes planted far apart, in small batches and protected with chicken wire to protect them from animals.
“We're asking about any suspicious activity along the Preston Beach Road entry, stationary vehicles along the road, or people carrying items such as gas bottles and jerry cans.”
