THE Mandurah Board Riders club held the Cockroach Cup on Saturday at the Port Bouvard Surf Life Saving Club, a fundraiser organised by volunteer committee members.
The race day theme of the night attracted flamboyant cocktail dresses and an array of stylish fascinators.
In true surf style, board shorts and bow ties also made an appearance.
The night was hosted by Rusty the Roach, who auctioned off cockroaches to be raced in 10 heats, followed by a grand final, along a race track created by the club.
The winning cockroach and his owner, James Gregory, were awarded a cash prize of $500 and a golden beach thong trophy. Guests also took part in a raffle, a silent auction and a fashion parade while they enjoyed a variety of food options put together by the club and prepared and served by volunteers. The event was supported by a number of sponsors, including Assassin Pest Control, Star Surf & Skate, Rusty and various divisional sponsors.
The event was a huge success, with funds to go towards continued junior development, including high performance clinics run by State level coaches and Surfing WA.
The funds will also help with the recent purchase a computerised scoring system making it one of the few in the state that can boast they have the same technology as used at the Margaret River Drug Aware Pro.
Event organiser, Kim Allen said he was proud of the massive show of support that the club received.
“It is obvious that our strength comes from our committed members and that is why Mandurah has the strongest board riders club in the state,” he said.
“There is something special about seeing kids of any sport grinning ear to ear with pride of their efforts.
“As Mandurah Board Riders continues to grow in strength to strength, the attraction of major surfing events like the upcoming Peel Pro will continue to come to Mandurah and one day we hope to see our Grommets surfing in state title events right here in Mandurah.”
The club plans to run the event again in 2017 following positive feedback.
The Mandurah Board Riders would like to thank everyone who participated in the Cockroach Cup, including the sponsors, the committee members and the Port Bouvard Surf Life Saving Club.
