THE four-legged friends at K9 Rescue Group are hoping for a ‘paw-sitively’ merry Christmas, with the help of the community.
The local rescue centre has put out a donation wish list, with the recent bushfire in Parklands highlighting some of the much-needed items.
“It was quite scary how close the fire came,” K9 Rescue Group president Carol Carter said.
“If it jumped the freeway, we would have had to evacuate.
“In 25 years we’ve never been that close and we realised how much we actual need.
“And [the fire season] is only going to get worse, not better.”
Topping the list are contributions towards a new water pump, a small tractor or a generator – with a $500 contribution from Frederick Irwin Anglican School already kick-starting the gift giving.
Joining the big ticket items are donations of dog and puppy treats, biscuits and food, including food for sensitive dogs.
“We’re also asking for either cat or human tuna as we have two huskies at the moment who won’t eat anything else,” Ms Carter said.
K9 Rescue Group is also asking for wheat germ, rolled oats, Weet-Bix, treacle and sunflower oil to make their all-important Satin Balls.
“The Satin Balls are something one of the volunteers came up with and it’s protein to help underweight dogs gain weight,” Ms Carter said.
“It makes a huge difference; we had one dog gain four-and-a-half kilos in a week just by having that once a day.”
