KEEP your eyes on Mandurah’s city centre over the next few months as a number of exciting events and activities are held to activate the space and engage the local community.
The City has recently appointed landscape and urban design company Skate Sculpture to help activate the city centre, and the team is keen to see the space come alive.
The overall project has been dubbed Shape Mandurah, which will not only deliver a series of family friendly activities and events, but is about bringing the community and businesses together to take ownership of the space and carry on the initial good work of Skate Sculpture.
Skate Sculpture project manager and designer David Snyder said the team was keen to inject some fresh fun and ideas into the city centre space.
“We really want to activate this great space, as it has a lot of potential to become a real hive of activity,” Mr Snyder said.
“It’s about engaging people, exciting people, and making them want to stay longer.
"Smart Street Mall particularly has a welcoming natural look about it, with trees and plants and a lovely outlook onto the estuary, but this can be further enhanced with landscaping, outdoor furniture and design.
“Part of the project is about creating linkages between different spaces, making the city centre feel connected and interesting.”
The business hopes to form a group of locals and business people who will eventually become project leaders and ambassadors for Shape Mandurah.
This will also include a Mandurah ‘soup’ whereby people come together to share and pitch their ideas for exciting new events and activities.
The first event being held is a Christmas Bazaar in the Smart Street Mall on Friday, December 18 from 5-9pm.
This will include gift making, a playhouse, workshops, snow room, food trucks and a Christmas card photo booth.
In January, three fun activities appealing to all ages will be held simultaneously in the city centre – hip hop and swing dance classes and a pop-up skate park above Make Place.
