THE Oyster Bar on Dolphin Drive was one of the top three fundraisers in Western Australia for the Lukaemia Foundation U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competition.
In its eighth year, the Understanding, Generous, Likeable You (U.G.L.Y) raised $173,400 to help families overcome the disadvantage of distance after a leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma diagnosis.
The Oyster Bar manager Vicki Sankey said it was the first time she had taken part in the fundraising venture and didn’t expect to raise more than $100.
After a handful of fundraising events including a raffle on Melbourne Cup day, Ms Sankey’s total came to $12,230.
“I had no expectation of doing as well as we did and it was thanks to our generous customers,” she said.
“Next year we hope to raise $20,000.”
Leukemia Foundation general manager Andrew York said while only one bartender could be crowned U.G.L.Y. he thanked every big-hearted bartender who had helped raise the grand total.
“This is the equivalent to more than 2167 nights of free accommodation for regional families during their treatment in the city,” he said.
