A local company is brewing interest in the beer industry, picking up eight medals in the past month.
Thorny Devil Craft Beer and Cider, which is part of the Cape Bouvard Winery and and Brewery, was nationally recognise at the Perth Royal Beer Show, the Australian Craft Beer Awards (ACBA) and the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) in October.
“It’s great for this area; for Mandurah,” proprietor Ed McAppion said.
“We had someone call us up from Sydney asking where Mandurah was because of these awards.
“It puts Mandurah on the map in the craft beer world.”
The Thorny Devil blonde ale was the shining star in the range, ranking the highest with a gold medal at the ACBA and a silver at the Perth show.
The Vienna lager, wheat beer and dark ale all picked up silver and bronze medals as well.
All entries had to meet a certain criteria regarding aroma, flavour, carbonation level and the style.
“If it’s a perfect example of that style of beer then it gets a gold,” proprietor Peter McAppion said.
“If there is a defect, in the mind of the judges – who are all industry recognised – that’s when it’s marked lower.
“It’s great recognition because it is new branding for the beer and we know that the quality of the beer would have to be at an Australian standard and be industry recognised.”
The local brewery is one of the few sustainable breweries in the state, with their beer and ciders made with rainwater.
It’s one of the things which Peter said sets the product a part.
“We also use premium ingredients, most of which are imported from Germany,” he said.
“I believe they make the best malt in the world, and we get a lot of our hops from there as well.”
Local beer lovers will soon be able to taste the award-winning drink at home as well, with the business constructing a bottle machine on premises, ready for self-distribution before Christmas.
The beer will not only be available at the brewery but online as well, with free delivery in Mandurah.
“It will be delivered cold to anywhere in Mandurah because there are no preservatives in it so it needs to be kept cold,” Peter said.
