Ready to rescue

PREPARATIONS are underway for the Mandurah Water Rescue Group’s (MWRG) busiest time of the year with the RAC helicopter sent to Mandurah yesterday for training drills.

The helicopter flew over two MWRG vessels off the Mandurah coastline and performed a number of training operations including lowering paramedics onto the back of a vessel and recovering persons submerged in water.

The training drill was scheduled ahead of the busy summer months for Mandurah waterways with MWRG receiving more than 300 calls for assistance last year.

The operation involved a test line sent from the helicopter, followed by a single paramedic lowered onto the waiting MWRG vessel.

A second paramedic was lowered a number of times to the MWRG vessel before the first paramedic was placed in the water for rescuing.

The second paramedic was then winched down to the first to lift them safely from the water as a number of small drills were also performed.

MWRG sent a crew of seven to assist with the training drill across the two rescue boats as they gear up for their busiest time of the year.

With school holidays only six school days away, families are expected to converge on the Mandurah waterways with warmer temperatures on the way.
