Kirby Swim Mandurah has trained and employed more than 100 swimming teachers since opening in 2009.
Swimming classes play a vital role in the lives of babies, toddlers and school-age children in the Peel region.
The region is surrounded by waterways, both ocean and inland, which present a significant risk for drowning in all age groups.
Centre manager Linda Cappello said with 26 recorded deaths in Australia due to drowning in zero-to-four-year-olds in 2014, and more than half of these occurring in swimming pools, it was vital to have highly trained and nationally qualified swimming teachers.
“Swimming teachers are able to instruct not only swimming skills, but also safety and survival skills by utilising their theoretical and practical training,” she said.
Olympic gold medalist and Kirby Swim owner Bill Kirby said swimming teaching was a job that involved fun, passion and a genuine love of learning.
“Having been a swimming teacher for over 20 years, I understand what joy teaching brings, and knowing you are helping to save children’s lives is a huge bonus,” he said.
“We often hear stories from our student’s parents about how their swim skills saved lives and it gives you a really great feeling to be working in such a great industry.”
Mr Kirby said it was fantastic to know the swim school had trained and employed over 100 local teachers from the region over the past six years.
