ALEX Winwood will travel to Queensland for the National Boxing Titles after wining the Western Australian 52-kilogram boxing title on the weekend.
The 18-year-old Eureka Boxing Club product from Mandurah put in a dominant display against his much older opponent, 30-year-old Simeon Geberat.
Winwood, who has been boxing for two years, said he was pleased to win his first senior title after setting a goal of making the National Titles earlier this year.
“He came down to 52kg as there were more experienced fighters in the 56kg division,” Winwood said.
“In the end he probably got a little more anxious than me.”
The fight was also Winwood’s first without a head guard, something he felt the full force of after copping a punch early to the head
“I got hit in the first round,” Winwood said.
“It probably wasn’t my usual fight style; I had to put safety first.
“He moves around a lot but I thought my way around the ring.
“I stalked him and picked him off when I needed.”
Winwood will contest the Golden Gloves in three weeks time in Perth before travelling to Queensland from November 18-22 for the National Titles.
Winwood’s coach Brian Sartori said Winwood was in good form but would take it one fight at a time.
“It’s very hard to go straight through and win it in your first try but he’s going very well,” he said.
Boxing WA will cover a portion of Winwood’s travel expenses but if anyone wanted to help with the cost they can call Sartori on 0413 146 860.
