ON THE back of recent heartbreak one Madora Bay cake decorator has taken out top prize for her wedding cake at the Perth Royal Show.
Anna Comper received three ribbons for her wedding cake including exhibitor gaining the most points in the decorated cakes open section, wedding cake with the highest points and a first place ribbon in the decorated wedding cake section.
She also placed second in the miniature wedding cake section.
The success came just months after losing her son Liam three days before he was due to be born.
“It was very emotional, he was stillborn three days before his due date,” she said.
“I dedicated it [the win] to my son.”
Mrs Comper said she would usually take a month to complete her entries but due to the extreme circumstance left her self just one week this year.
“I couldn’t decide how I wanted to decorate [the cakes],” she said.
“I kept changing the design.”
Mrs Comper said in the end she just made decisions as she went.
“I was thinking about Liam and I think that came out in the cake,” she said.
Mrs Comper is no stranger to the Royal Show having entered for the past fours years, in that time taking out numerous awards including a special ribbon for most outstanding wedding cake in 2014.
“I love to have a challenge,” she said.
“The standard is very high.”
The local cake maker hasn’t always decorated cakes, originally from the Czech Republic Mrs Comper has spent the majority of her life as a pastry chief, including a 10-year stint in London.
“When I was 14-years-old I started studying confectionary,” she said.
“I always liked to help [bake] even though I can’t eat sugar.”
Mrs Comper only made a change to cake decorating after moving to Australia four years ago.
“Even with 16 years’ experience I couldn’t find a job,” she said.
“Someone asked me to make a cake for them and that’s how it all started.”
Soon after Mrs Comper started her own business, Comper Cakes, specialising in wedding and 3D cakes.
The business has gone from strength to strength with Mrs Comper winning back-to-back Australian Bride and Industry Awards in 2013 and 2014 for her cakes.
