According to an army of online conspiracy theorists and two Christian pastors with enormous followings in the United States, the end of the world is nigh.
In fact, humanity is scheduled for extinction at the end of September.
According to one theory going viral online, a space rock about four kilometres wide will strike Puerto Rico on September 23.
However, Christian pastors Mark Blitz and John Hagee are planning for the end on September 28, when the last of four 'blood moons' – or total lunar eclipses – coincide with a papal visit to the US.
The two pastors have predicted the second coming of Jesus Christ on that day.
But the online rumours of an asteroid hitting the earth on Thursday have been circulating so widely that NASA issued a statement denying them.
Paul Chodas from NASA's Near-Earth Object office said there was no evidence an asteroid or any other celestial object is on a trajectory with Earth.
“In fact, not a single one of the known objects has any credible chance of hitting our planet over the next century," he said.
"There is no scientific basis, not one shred of evidence, that an asteroid or any other celestial object will impact Earth on those dates."
Mr Chodas said NASA tracks 13,000 near-Earth asteroids.
But Rev. Efrain Rodriguez – a self-proclaimed prophet – urged NASA to issue a warning “so people can be relocated from the areas that are to be affected”.
Mr Rodriguez has claimed online that agencies in the U.S. were aware of the asteroid and NASA had briefed President Barack Obama about its trajectory.
“The rich and powerful are making plans to store food and build protective shelters,” he said.
