MANDURAH crime and anti-social behaviour is on the coalition government’s agenda with justice minister Michael Keenan committing an additional $150,000 to deliver crime deterrents in the city.
Justice minister Michael Keenan announced the funding with Canning Liberal candidate Andrew Hastie at the Mandurah RSL memorial park on Friday morning.
Mr Keenan committed $250,000 through the safer street programme to deliver CCTV cameras and light poles along the Mandurah western foreshore to improve community safety.
This is part of $420,000 secured by former Canning member Don Randall and will be delivered under the coalition’s Community Development Grants Program.
City of Mandurah mayor Marina Vergone attended the announcement and said she was very excited especially after the recent vandalism attacks at the memorial and in the vicinity.
Earlier this year more than $20,000 worth of equipment was stolen from reserves and playgrounds around Mandurah including Quarry Park in Meadow Springs, Caterpillar Park, Coodanup Foreshore, Novara Foreshore in Erskine, and Dawesville Foreshore.
The Mandurah War Memorial was the latest to be attacked with swings, park benches, picnic seats, a flying fox and memorial plaques stolen.
Cr Vergone said the city had no idea who did it but hoped the CCTV cameras would “catch the low-lives” and stop it happening again.
Mr Hastie said if anyone was seen doing the wrong thing on the foreshore evidence would be collected against them.
“We want Mandurah families to enjoy the foreshore while feeling safe,” he said.
