Wagin-born apprentice electrician Corey Lutz was crowned Apprentice of the Year in the second year category in the 2015 NECA WA and Clipsal Apprentice Awards last Friday.
Hundreds gathered at the 2015 NECA WA and Clipsal by Schneider Electric Excellence and Apprentice Awards in the Crown Astral Ballroom to celebrate the achievements of WA electrical contractors and their teams.
Corey was presented with the award by Minister for Training and Workforce Development Liza Harvey.
“It’s pretty exciting, it’s a pretty high honour,” Corey said.
Growing up in regional WA, Corey re-located from Wagin to begin his career as an electrician in 2014, doing his home town proud.
A former student of Narrogin SHS, Corey said part of his drive came from his teachers, it was this push to be challenged that brought Corey to his current career.
“My teachers in my high school really pushed me to be my best,” he said.
“I thought being an electrician would test me, make me be my best. Other areas wouldn’t have challenged me,” he said.
Corey’s employer, Techforce Electrical Director Mark Cikarela, said his first impression was positive by the commitment of him and his whole family.
“They travelled together from Wagin and stayed in local accommodation while Corey undertook a one week trial with our company,” he said
“It was evident that strong family values has contributed to Corey’s work ethic, motivation and commitment.”
Corey attributes his accomplishments so early in his career to being mentored by brothers and Directors of Techforce Electrical, Mark and Luke Cikarela.
“They aren’t just great people to work alongside, they help me in every way possible to achieve my goals and ambitions”, said Corey.
“During my career I want complete every job and task to the highest standard; making and doing everything as safe as possible, and doing it with pride.”
Corey boasts a keen desire gain more experience overseas once he is a qualified tradesman.
“I want to try in different countries and see how they work, Canada would be ideal,” he said.
