UP AND coming Mandurah boxer Alex Winwood came away with a strong victory against Jesse Dawes at the Croatian Club in Fremantle on Sunday.
Winwood, who trains at Eureka Boxing Club in Silver Sands, was on the front foot for the duration of the 56-kilogram fight, winning a unanimous points decision.
Winwood said it was good to get the win against an opponent who was four kilograms heavier than he was.
“It was a good fight, he’s a tough opponent so it’s good to get the victory,” Winwood said.
The 18-year-old boxer who has recently stepped up to the senior division had enjoyed a productive month.
After a potential fight in New Zealand fell through, Winwood received a call up to fight against the three-time 49kg Australian Champion in Sydney earlier this month.
Winwood’s opponent in the 52kg bout, who was using the fight for preparation for the Oceania Title, was Josh English, an experienced boxer who had fought in China and America.
Winwood’s coach, Brian Sartori, said the English camp was expecting to win comfortably but got more than they bargained for.
“It was a big step up for Alex and he went all the way with English,” he said.
“It was the best I’ve seen him box.
“The fight could have gone either way.”
Despite English coming away with the win, Winwood gained a lot of admirers in the boxing world.
Winwood said he was a little nervous before the fight but settled quickly once the fight started.
“It was very different than my other fights,” he said.
“To fight a man that’s been around for a long time and see how he went about it.
“It was my first fight as a senior.”
Winwood, who has been boxing for just under two years, said his primary focus was now on winning the State Titles in October and qualify for the National Titles.
