A 10-year-old boy who took a handgun to a Secret Harbour school to show his friends prompted a police response this week.
The boy took the weapon to Comet Bay Primary School on Monday.
He did not threaten anyone with it.
Police are investigating hoe the child came to be in possession of the weapon and who owns it.
Comet Bay Primary School principal Matthew Osborne said the weapon was confiscated by a teacher, police were called immediately and all parents were notified via letter.
"I have assured parents that at no time were students threatened," he said.
"It appears the child brought the item to school to show friends."
Mr Osborne said the students who saw the gun had been counselled.
The school issued a letter to parents and carers.
"I wish to inform parents and carers about an incident at our school yesterday that involved one of our students bringing a prohibited item onto the school grounds in their school bag," it read.
"The item was shown to a group of students who have all since been counselled about the incident.
"The matter has been reported to the police who are investigating.
"In light of this incident I would urge families to be aware of what children are accessing at home and bringing to school and discuss with your child that if they see or hear anything at school that concerns them to report it immediately to a staff member."
