THE proposal for a new local law regarding Mandurah holiday homes was rejected by councillors at Tuesday’s meeting, supporting an alternate motion instead.
Councillor Caroline Knight moved an alternate motion to the City of Mandurah officers’ recommendation, which she said would have been costly to holiday home owners.
Instead Cr Knight suggested council adopts a “responsive action” approach.
It would have council record known holiday home locations, give complaints in relation to noise and vehicle parking high priority, produce a brochure of relevant procedures and send letters to existing holiday home operators detailing the behaviour expected and processes which will be followed if complaints arise.
“I believe there is no real data for the City of Mandurah to introduce a new law,” Cr Knight said.
“Why do this when the data doesn’t support it?
“We should be optimistic about the future of Mandurah as a tourist town, not penalising the majority if holiday home owners who do the right thing.”
The report was a result of complaints made to the City about unruly holiday goers at some Mandurah holiday homes.
The motion will be up for final approval at the full council meeting on June 23.
