The son of a pensioner stabbed to death in Geraldton in 2008 is sickened by news the killer was moved to a medium security prison six years into a 19-year minimum sentence.
Fairfax Media reported in 2009 that Eric Pedersen, then 49, was handed a life sentence for murdering 94-year-old grandfather Joseph Hollomby inside the Geraldton home he shared with his son.
While Joseph's son Les was in Perth, Pedersen, a drug user and habitual law-breaker, broke into the home to steal guns to help "settle a score" with another person, killing Joseph who stood in his way.
Joseph Hollomby was beloved by his community, where his famed dedication to making and selling biscuits to raise huge amounts of money for charity earned him the nickname the Shortbread Man.
Les Hollomby said he had heard from a victims of crime support group on Friday that Pedersen had been moved to Acacia Prison from maximum-security jail Casuarina.
"He's only done six years of a 19-year sentence and he's gone out of maximum security to an 'open plan design' prison with a 'focus on rehabilitation' where he can move around freely," Mr Hollomby said.
"This is pissing me off. I've been crook over the weekend because I just can't stop thinking about it. I want something done.
"I want him back in maximum security where he should be."
Mr Hollomby said the shock of his father's sudden death still reverberated.
"Any time I wanted to know anything about the past, I would go and ask Dad," he said.
"He was like a dictionary, an encyclopaedia - I didn't need to store all that information for myself.
"If he'd had an illness, died in the natural way I could have had the chance to ask him all of those things in advance and transfer that knowledge.
"But one minute he was here and one minute he was gone."
Mr Hollomby said the Hollomby Foundation had been set up in his father's name to continue his good works, particularly providing nursing scholarships.
"It leaves Dad doing what he used to do," he said.
"In his heyday he was raising $75,000 a year, for five years he kept that up.
"I get someone telling me their memories of the Shortbread Man at least once a month.
"Then bloody Eric Pedersen ... is not where he should be. He's not paying for his crime. He should be doing hard time ... he took someone's life."
Pedersen's drug- and alcohol-fuelled rampage continued with him firing shots into a house filled with people, shooting a llama that belonged to his sister and crashing a party his brother was holding at his home, threatening to shoot himself in front of a crowd of people.
Pedersen was also jailed for one year for killing the llama, two years and six months for going around armed so as to cause fear and two years for stealing, each to be served concurrently with the murder term.
A Department of Corrective Services spokesman said the department could not comment on individual prisoners' management, both out of respect for victims and for security reasons.
"The Department ensures community safety by securing prisoners, keeping staff and prisoners safe, and providing rehabilitation programs to offenders," he said.
"A Prisoner's security classification and location is regularly reviewed. The management and placement of prisoners involves a risk assessment to ensure public safety.
"Both maximum and medium-security prisoners at all prisons are subject to strict security restrictions to ensure public safety. These security restrictions include physical barriers, electronic surveillance, individual prisoner management, access control, perimeter patrols, and night-time lockdown in cells. The prison environment and prison routine are essentially the same at both types of prisons."
