AT A Special Council meeting on Tuesday night councillors endorsed a report that would see the Mandurah Forum almost double in size and become a focal point of the region.
The $300 million redevelopment of the centre will need final approval by Peel Joint Development Assessment Panel at 10am on April 22 in the Council Chambers, due to the large size of the project, before it receives the final green light.
The redevelopment would see about 33,000 square metres of additional retail floor space, increasing the centre total from 38,000sqm to 71,000sqm.
This would include an additional 150 new stores.
There will be an improved food court where the current carpark accessed from Clarence Street is located, as well as a new casual dining precinct to the south.
Improved street presentation to Pinjarra Road will create a “visually appealing entry statement” to Mandurah, Council said.
Car parking will also increase from 2347 bays to 2978 bays, with the majority located on a newly constructed roof which will include a mezzanine parking deck in the north-west portion of the site (corner of Dower Street and Clarice Street).
Part of Arnold Street will also be closed to facilitate the redevelopment.
The centre is planned to be expanded in stages with the vast majority of the centre to be completed in Stage 1.
Approval pending, construction on the centre is expected to begin next year.
