THE Hawaiian Ride for Youth riders hopped off their saddles when they stopped at Pinjarra Senior High School on Friday.
The ride, which is sponsored by property group Hawaiian, is held annually in March across five days with riders covering more than 700 kilometres from Albany to Perth, with everyone finishing in Kings Park on Saturday.
There are three groups in total, one that goes along the coast through Bunbury, one that goes through the middle through Collie and one that goes through the Wheatbelt.
The riders took time to speak to the students about youth suicide and how there is help available.
In order to take part in the ride competitors must raise at least $5000 each and, so far, the ride has raised more than $2.17million, from about 500 riders.
Rider David Flanagan, who was the 2014 Western Australian of the Year, decided he would do the ride to help promote that youth can find help.
He said a rider died in training, run over by a drunk over.
Mr Flanagan said he thought it was such a selfless ride and he wanted to get involved.
“We were, all kids, some of us are going to have kids and we know people with kids and you can go and do something for yourself,” he said. “We go to each of the schools and we give them a couple of messages including if at some stage you are feeling down there are people that can help you and it will end.
“The other thing we tell them is how to reach out for help.”
