THE woman at the centre of an horrific animal cruelty case heard in Mandurah Magistrates Court earlier this year has been banned from being involved in the greyhound industry for 15 years.
An inquiry into the January 12 conviction of Gemma Tovey by Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) stewards was held on Wednesday.
The investigation centred on Tovey’s abandonment and neglect of three dogs, including one greyhound, which were left to starve after she moved house.
Tovey, who was a licensed owner and greyhound catcher, was banned from owning or having contact with animals for five years during sentencing which also saw her ordered to undertake community service work.
RWWA stewards launched their own inquiry into Tovey’s conduct and found her continued involvement in the sport would be detrimental to its “proper control and regulation”.
The inquiry heard evidence from the RSPCA and Tovey.
Court transcripts were also used in the investigation.
As well as the ban from participating in the greyhound industry, Tovey was fined $5000.
