RESTORATION work started on Bunbury’s War Memorial today to ensure the monument is in pristine condition for this year’s Anzac Day centenary celebrations.
The City last year was awarded a Federal Anzac Centenary grant of $29,704, as well as $10,000 from Lotterywest, to restore the monument.
Scaffolding was erected yesterday to allow work to begin.
City staff have previously carried out maintenance work and upgrading of the soft landscaping, electrical and water supply in the vicinity of the memorial to beautify the surroundings.
A heritage conservationist will undertake the restoration and a heritage architect will supervise.
Research into the soldier’s original features, as well as a schedule of works as required by the State Heritage Office, has been completed.
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said he was pleased that work had begun.
“I look forward to the completion of the works so the monument can be restored to its former glory in time for Anzac Day,” Mr Brennan said.
“I would like to acknowledge Lotterywest and the Federal Government for providing the City with the grant, and the RSL for its contributions.”
