Footy fans won't see cheaper food and beverages at the newly-named Domain Stadium in the wake of the MCG slashing theirs for the 2015 AFL season.
Any AFL footy fan who has attended a game knows you don't get much change from $20 for a hamburger and beer these days.
But that will change - at the MCG at least - with Fairfax Media revealing on Monday that Australia's most famous sports stadium will become one of its cheapest, heaping pressure on the likes of Etihad Stadium and Domain (originally Subiaco Oval) to follow suit.
The Melbourne Cricket Club and its hospitality partner EPICURE, said it would spend $14 million during the next seven years to help deliver cheaper fare and drinks for MCG footy fans.
The price of hot chips will drop from $5.60 to $4; a hot dog from $6.50 to $4 and a meat pie also $4 (down from $4.80). A bottle of water drops from $5 to $3 and beer drinkers won't have to fork out $1 for a tray anymore.
Domain Stadium general manager Gavin Taylor said it had no plans to follow the MCG's lead.
"A review of food prices has been undertaken and whilst final prices are still being finalised, there has been a commitment to maintain 2014 prices on key retail items such as chips, hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks," he said.
"The WAFC is very aware of the importance of food as part of the match-day experience for fans and always undertakes benchmarking of prices around Australia to ensure value is provided to fans in Western Australia."
But before footy fans start thinking about boycotting the menu at Domain Stadium, the price of food and drink in 2014 was relatively cheap compared to the national average at other major stadiums around Australia, according to the WAFC.
A burger at Domain Stadium set you back $8.50 last year, when the national average was $9.67.
Fish and chips was $9, while the average last year was $10.49.
In fact, all the food and drink at Domain last year was cheaper than the national average except for a 600ml soft drink (14 cents more expensive at $5.20), a hot dog ($6 compared to $5.81) and a bottle of water ($4.70 versus $4.61).
Mr Taylor said the WAFC along with hospitality giant Delaware North was actually planning to improve the food experience at Domain Stadium, with plans to spend just under $2 million on the the menu and upgrading outlets.
"The new food range will also include specific children's meal offers plus a mix of traditional and new speciality food items," he said.
"In addition, Domain Stadium will also be launching a 'WA Home Grown' menu range where some of Western Australia's best local producers will be showcased through their ingredients and produce being used across the whole menu range.
"Domain Stadium will be showcasing a uniquely West Australian food experience in 2015."
The WAFC couldn't confirm its prices for food and beverages at Domain Stadium for the 2015 season however.
