FORMER Peel school students who signed their signature in 1999 to be etched on paving surrounding the bell tower only for it to be ripped up last March to make way for Elizabeth Quay are in luck.
The signatures will now be etched into a new copper art piece (pictured) to be installed at the Barrack Street Jetty precinct in early April after files containing the original signatures were found.
The new artwork, created by Perth artists Simon Gauntlett and Matthew Ngui, will incorporate the signatures of more than 200,000 who signed their name to mark the new century.
The artwork features a headphone-shaped design with the signatures etched into thousands of copper plates.
A fibre optic light display has been incorporated to represent the passage of time from the year 2000 to the present, illuminating the artwork on interactive panels.
Arts Minister John Day said it was important that a permanent reinterpretation of the signatures was developed as part of Elizabeth Quay.
“I believe Simon and Matthew have created a significant art piece that will allow students who participated in Sign In 2000 and their families and friends to once again connect with an important part of their history,” he said.
“Digital technology has been incorporated to improve the experience by providing greater access to the signatures for participants living in regional areas, interstate or overseas.”
The online application will enable participants and family members to locate a signature on the artwork, view the tile in a larger format, download an image of the original or new tiles and share via social media.
