WHEN it comes to nerds, it takes one to know one.
This makes Keira Daley the ideal candidate to bring LadyNerd to life for Perth Fringe World’s Mandurah connection, HubBub.
From physicist and chemist Marie Curie to the woman behind liquid paper, Bette Nesmith Graham, this stage production is all about women with brains.
Daley brings these women to life in this award-winning musical comedy.
“I decided to write LadyNerd because I found that a lot of what it was to be a nerd was misattributed,” she said.
“And also looking at what we, as women, have achieved in a light-hearted way.
“I’m a life-long nerd – not in the science way; I’m mainly a grammar and language nerd.
“I studied really hard at school, put pen to paper and then ended up going on to the stage.
“But this is all about reclaiming the nerds; in a way nerds rule the world.”
While LadyNerd is based on learning and is quite literally a history lesson on stage, the performance has been a sell-out across Australia for a reason.
Daley ensured that entertainment values are at the forefront and with the help of composer Mark Chamberlain, repurposed songs for the show.
“I come from a comedy and musical background, so for me it’s all about having fun,” she said.
“I only expanded on ideas that would make it fun.
“My intension was to write a fun script which would inspire people.
“I did a lot of research and Marie Curie was a good starting point – I still have a growing list of people that I could probably write another show.
“But on top of what they did, I was looking for a character which would be good on stage.
“There were others but they just didn’t fit into the show and I didn’t feel like I could make them entertaining.”
LadyNerd will be at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre January 30 to February 1.
