MANDURAH’S city centre may be in for a face lift with Council passing the motion to hold workshops regarding its future.
The motion made by councillor David Schumacher proposed the first of a series of workshops to discuss the city centre’s role and location and possible changes which could be made.
It has the intent of “working with landowners and giving consideration to transport, built form, land use and events/activities”.
The motion read: “it is important to engage the landowners so that real change can come about”.
“One thing we need to work on is our CBD – if that’s what we can even call it,” cr Schumacher said.
“I’m not sure anyone thinks of it as the CBD anymore.
"We need to get together to develop a thriving [area].
"Let’s work together and come up with ideas and designs together to create a place people want to go, where businesses are thriving and Mandurah can be proud of.”
He said there needed to be a balance between both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Cr Fred Riebeling said it may be time for the City of Mandurah to consider the introduction of multi-storey parking and added this would be “very expensive”.
When Cr Peter Jackson asked who would be involved in the workshops, City of Mandurah chief executive officer Mark Newman said the first workshop would be “creating a road map”.
“I think the intention initially is the workshop would be for City members and staff but there’s no doubt that this can be extended,” he said.
