TWO John Tonkin College sisters are making waves as they enter their final year of study.
Twins Tegan and Tiarna Eades have just completed year 11 and are already on the path to achieving their career goals.
Tiarna recently won the National Indigenous Future Leader Award and received $500 to use for books and school supplies.
The award’s criteria involved showing leadership potential, academic achievement and a letter of recommendation from the principal.
The girls are both doing school-based traineeships through South Metro Youth Links (SMYL) Community Services.
SMYL find work for students in areas they are interested in and monitor their progress in the workplace.
Tiarna wants to study sports science at university to become a sports teacher and spends Fridays at Meadow Springs Primary School assisting a teacher.
“I help with the year two sports class and it’s shown me that I really want to do that,” she said.
Teagan wants to be a flight attendant and is currently completing training with Qantas.
“I help check people into flights, work in the Qantas club and I recently got to manoeuvre the air bridge to connect to a plane so people could exit,” she said.
“I didn’t expect for them to let me do that – it was pretty exciting.
“I’d love to be a flight attendant travelling the Perth to Sydney to Honolulu route.”
The girls are both part of the Follow the Dream, Partnerships to Success program, which helps indigenous students reach their goals with support and tutoring.
“I don’t think I’d be doing so well without Follow the Dream, Tiarna said.
Teagan said the program helped her keep on top of her school work and get ready for exams.
The pair are also on JTC’s student council, with Tiarna as social captain and Tegan as cultural captain.
Tiarna will help to organise the school ball and other events and Tegan will oversee Harmony Day celebrations and transitions for year sevens into high school and year nines as they move onto the school's Education Drive campus.
They fit this in with part times jobs at Coles.
“It’s great to study together – if I don’t know something I just ask Tegan,” Tiarna said.
