A GROUP of Mandurah women were empowered on Saturday with a tyre changing workshop.
The session was held at Beaurepaires Mandurah and showed the women what should be in their boot kit, how to properly install a jack and the process to remove a tyre safely.
Assistant manager Claire Bannister organised the workshop and said she wanted to make women feel confident when dealing with their cars.
“I didn’t like how nervous women looked when they came into the workshop – you should be able to go into a place and not feel silly,” she said.
“When I started working here everything was like another language and leaning things is empowering.
“I wanted to run this workshop to make women able to approach the shop more confidently.”
One participant, Sam Jackson, had bought a second-hand car for her teenage daughter and wanted to make sure she knew how to change a tyre.
“We were at home and I tried to show her how to change the tyre but we couldn’t physically get the wheel nuts off,” she said.
“I came into Beaurepaires and it wasn’t until they asked that I realised I didn’t even have a jack – the previous owner hadn’t left it in the boot.
“Now that my daughter’s driving I want to make sure she knows what to do.”
Ms Bannister said she was currently taking expressions of interest for future workshops.
