THE recent warm weather has meant an influx of kittens at Mandurah veterinary clinics.
This time of year is breeding season for cats, with dozens of kittens being abandoned around the region.
Coastal Veterinary and Pet Care veterinary nurse Talietha Harkness said if the mother cat was young, she could become overwhelmed and leave the kittens at an early stage.
“We had some come in a while ago that were only two days old – the staff here took them home to bottle-feed them during the nights,” she said.
“A man brought in a litter of 10 and their mother last week but luckily all but one have been adopted since then.
“Otherwise they go to foster carers and get re-homed through them.”
A representative from Greenfields Vetinary Clinic said they had also had a litter of abandoned kittens brought in in the last fortnight.
Cat act laws that came into effect last November require all pet cats to be sterilised and microchipped, to help reduce numbers of strays.
