THE grand final of the 2014 Hobie Kayak Fishing Bream Series will be held in South Yunderup on the weekend.
It is the first time the two-day grand final will be held in Western Australia with the Murray and Serpentine rivers providing a diverse venue for the grand finalists with kayaks launched from the River Resort beach.
The grand final will unite the countries best fishermen and women with more than 50 kayak anglers, eight from WA vying for the top prize.
Fishing will start at approximately 10am on Saturday and Sunday with anglers having to return their catch for weigh-in by 2pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday.
The fishermen and women have a three-bag limit each day with the highest cumulative weight at the end of the competition the winner.
Simon Goldsmith, tournament director at Australian Bream Tournaments said the catch and release bream tournament was fishing at its best.
“It’s a series that allows anglers to challenge their abilities in a competitive realm and do so on a national stage,” he said.
“The opportunity to showcase WA’s outstanding bream fishing to anglers from across the country is a very exciting prospect.”
Mathew Williams of Getaway Outdoors, who played a part in getting the grand final to the west, said they were excited to be hosting the grand final this year.
“The Murray River launch area and facilities offers a stunning back drop to some of the best and most diverse bream fishing in WA,” he said.
“The options are endless and there is something to cater for every competitor.”
WA hosts only two rounds in the lead up to the grand final which previously made it difficult for WA competitors to both qualify for the grand final and gain experience.
The number of competitive kayak fishermen was also low before Getaway Outdoors created a six-round local competition two years ago.
Williams said the competition took the number of competitors from 10 to 50 and now thought some of the local competitors could win the grand final.
“There local knowledge will give them a good chance of winning,” he said.
