A MAN who rolled a car into a police vehicle as he tried in vain to escape has been spared a penalty in court on Friday.
Robin Christopher Yarran was wanted on multiple outstanding arrest warrants when detectives followed a vehicle into the carpark of the Ravenswood Hotel in September.
When the Toyota Prado came to a stop, police in an unmarked vehicle parked directly behind and approached the driver.
While speaking with the driver outside the car, Mr Yarran appeared from the rear of the vehicle, locking all doors and climbing into the driver’s seat.
He frantically tried multiple times to put the four-wheel-drive into gear, but ended up just rolling back into the police car as he tried to escape.
Officers yelled for Mr Yarran to stop but he continued to rev the out-of-gear vehicle.
One officer was able to reach through the front passenger window and hit Mr Yarran’s hand with a baton.
After failing to get the car in gear, Mr Yarran yelled ‘I give up’ repeatedly before getting out of the vehicle.
When arrested, Mr Yarran was also wanted in relation to a high speed chase in Furnissdale in July.
Mr Yarran was the driver of a Holden Astra parked on Riverside Drive when police drove past.
Mr Yarran panicked at the sight of officers and sped away, recorded at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone.
Police were forced to abort the chase after they lost sight of Mr Yarran’s vehicle.
Appearing in court on Friday via video link, it was argued Mr Yarran had already served more than two months behind bars since his Ravenswood Hotel arrest.
Magistrate Vivien Edwards said Mr Yarran’s time spent in custody was “sufficient” and failed to impose a further penalty.
He was disqualified from driving for six months for the excess speeding and ordered to pay court costs.
He remains in custody as he awaits sentencing on other charges.
