THIRTEEN students from Pinjarra Senior High School (PSHS) returned from a two-week study tour of Indonesia this month with a greater understanding of the country.
The year nine and 10 language other than English (LOTE) students travelled to Yogyakarta on the island of Java on September 20 where they undertook a week-long university language course at the Sanata Dharma University.
PSHS Indonesian teacher Anne Marie Crook, who travelled with the students, said they learnt a lot in the course.
“They all graduated with very high marks,” she said.
“It was challenging, they all were allocated a one-on-one tutor that were students at the university.
“They liked learning from someone who was ‘young and cool’.”
The tour was based more in culture in the second week which coincided with the first week of the school holidays.
The students visited a volcano, a palace and a cave and stayed in a village.
“The students worked in a rice field and had a go at planting rice,” Mrs Crook said.
“The volcano was a favourite with the students.
"It was a great experience for them all; for some it was their first time going on a plane.”
The tour, which is expected to become a bi-annual event, was made possible thank to a $1500 grant from Alcoa.
