LITTLE creatures taken in by the Mandurah Wildlife Rescue have Mandurah Catholic College (MCC) students to thank for some recent additions to the centre.
Students from St Peter’s house built metal stands and sewed pouches for kangaroos to hang and sleep in, washed windows and built stands for glass tanks that house reptiles and possums.
They also fundraised almost $1500 for the group throughout the year.
Mandurah Wildlife Rescue volunteer Trish Dixon said she was impressed with the students’ willingness to help.
“They’ve done a great job,” she said.
“The stands and pouches were things we desperately needed here, especially since this is a busy time of year.
“We have lots of baby animals come into the centre during the warmer months.”
MCC teacher Keiran McCabe said the students had worked hard this year and got to bottle feed some of the animals as a reward.
“I wanted to choose something local that would get their attention and that they could get involved in,” he said.
“Two of our students Joseph and Holly gave up some evenings after school to help and Holly even learned to weld to create the metal stands.”
The centre is currently bottle-feeding 27 joeys and there are about another 25 joeys in their care.
The group also look after wallabies, possums, bobtails and a variety of birds.
