Twelve-year-old Danny Micco had a rude awakening in the early hours of Saturday morning when a burglar smashed his way into his house.
Danny's mum had gone out for dinner on Friday night so he was home alone when the intruder crashed into his bedroom, bleeding heavily, and threatened to hit the boy.
"I just heard this massive smash and all of a sudden the guy just comes into my room and starts taking everything," Danny told TV reporters.
Police say the burglar cut himself when he smashed a window to get into the house around 12.30 am.
"He pushed me away and tried to hit me but I blocked him with my hand," Danny said.
"I was really scared. I asked him if I could put my shirt on and I asked him if he wanted something to eat.
"The guy kept on taking stuff and after a while I realised he wasn't going to leave soon. So I saw the garage door was open and I snuck under it and ran to my brother's friend's house and called the police."
The burglar seemed intent on clearing out the Miccos' house. He was going from room to room, grabbing whatever he could carry and throwing it over a fence into an empty lot at the back of the property.
When police arrived they saw a man trying to escape by climbing over the wall at the rear of the property. Among the officers to tackle the intruder was a dog handler, and during the struggle the burglar was bitten on the face by police dog Freddie.
The 22-year-old Mirrabooka man was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for treatment.
Due to his aggressive behaviour he was sedated and remains under guard in hospital.
Scared as he was Danny thought there might have been a silver lining to the frightening home invasion.
"One of the things he took was my schoolbag. I got quite excited for a bit because it meant I didn't have to do homework," he said.
But the bag full of school books was among the property recovered from the rear of the house.
