SAN Remo business Tides Café has been named as a finalist in the Australian Café of the Year Awards for its Mexican Siesta dish.
Tides, located at the Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club, was among only three Western Australian eateries chosen for the final 21 places, out of more than 1200 entries submitted.
“The dish is made up of baby spinach, chilli baked beans and soft poached eggs topped with cheese, crispy bacon, slow baked to perfection and served with avocado, tomato salsa and soft tortillas,” hospitality manager Bernice Daniell said.
“It’s been really popular so we’ve just put it on our breakfast menu permanently.
“We’re very excited because the café was a club-funded venue and we started small with just breakfast but now we’ve expanded to lunch as well.
“It’s such a nice sense of achievement.”
Ms Daniell said she was grateful to the customers who voted for the dish.
“We wouldn’t be where we are today without our customers,” she said.
“Our head chef Nalini Marday-Vyapooree has been with us since we opened and she’s worked hard to create great dishes.”
Throughout the next month mystery judges will visit the café and score it on the quality of the venue as a whole and whether the staff are friendly and helpful.
Only one café will be selected as the nationwide winner and will take away a Renault Clio worth more than $32,000.
