THE future of Crab Fest is set to be one without the Action Sports Games with a report motioned for final approval at Tuesday’s Council meeting.
While councillors including Peter Rogers, Jane Field and Peter Jackson expressed their disappointment the extreme sports event may no longer be part of the Crab Fest schedule after 2015, the report from People and Communities director was unanimously passed for full approval next week.
The report presented to Council said the Action Sports Games were delivered at a "considerable cost" to the City of Mandurah, State Government and event provider Ocean and Earth Sports Management, with the 2013 games costing about $1.1million.
"When the event was first considered it was thought that there would be considerable interest from the corporate sector to sponsor the event over time, significantly reducing the cost to the City," the report read.
"While sponsors have been sourced by the event promoter, this has not benefited the City and the event outlay has remained at $200,000 (in sponsorship), plus $15,000 additional costs (waste management, fencing, scheduled toilet cleaning and opening ceremony)."
Cr Fred Riebeling said there could be potential for the event to be held on a different weekend, separate from the Crab Fest.
"The demographic of Action Sports means it's a worthwhile project but not on the same weekend as Crab Fest," he said.
"I think the event should be a stand-alone event.
"I think put together with the Crab Fest it really just clogs up some of the areas."
The report presented to Council said with the absence of the Action Sports Games there was an opportunity to provide an “even higher-end seafood experience within the Crab Fest event”.
