EUREKA Boxing club’s Alex Winwood could not be going into the upcoming Golden Gloves tournament in better form.
The Golden Gloves will begin on October 31 and will run over the weekend to decide who the best fighter in each weight division is in the state.
The tournament is one of the most prestigious tournaments along with the state titles.
Last weekend he defeated the runner-up of the Australian National Titles Joe Scaffidi at the Croation Club in North Fremantle to take his record to 7-1.
Eureka Boxing Club coach Brian Sartoria said it was a great fight and Winwood was smarter.
“It was a classy performance by Alex, who showed really silky skills against his opponent,” he said.
“Scaffidi kept throwing punches and he kept blocking them, then he hit him with a variety of different punches.”
Sartori said he was confident Winwood would be able to take the Golden Gloves in the 52 kilogram weight division.
“We are really confident and we are going into this tournament to win it,” he said.
“He is likely to come up against some of the best fighters in the country and I think he can defeat them.”
He said he was not cocky, but confident Winwood would be able to get the job done against any opponent.
Winwood has only been boxing for the past 13 months and said once he gained some confidence he started enjoying his boxing and became better at it.
Winwood has only lost one fight to date and said that loss motivated him to make sure he continued winning.
“I have only lost one fight and I want it to stay at one fight,” he said.
Winwood trains at the Eureka Boxing Club five to six times a week and said he would love to represent Australia at the Olympics.
“I just beat the second ranked boxer in the country and I would love to get there one day,” he said.
“I just graduated from high school and I am working towards getting a Certificate IV in personal training.”
